Intresting Facts

The Jaguarundi are very good swimmers.They have been known to cross rivers and lakes to get to where they want to go. In some places they call the Jaguarundi the leoncillo or in English the little lion.They are also called the otter cat.The Jaguarundi are very shy animals and are very cautious before approaching humans or traps. They are related to the big cat the Jaguar.

Life span and reproduction

In the wild they can live about 12 years.In captivity they can live up to 20-23 years.They are very solitary and usually only come together to mate.It takes about 105 days for the baby's to be born. Two to four baby's will be born. Once the baby's are born the father will leave.The mother has to take care of the baby's until they are old enough to live on their own.

Where do they live?

The Jaguarundi is known to live from Texas all the way to Argentina.They have also been seen in Arizona.They are endangered so we are seeing less of them in the United States.Some people even think they are extinct in The U.S. They live in many environments from wetlands to rain forests and Savannah's . They like to live in trees but will also liven in flatland's.

What do they eat?

Diet
The Jaguarundi is a carnivore.It eats mostly small mammals,but will also eat reptiles and birds if they manage to catch them.They will also eat amphibians and fish. Some Jaguarundi have been known to leap off to ground to try to catch a bird.they are good climbers so if anything goes up a tree it wont be safe.
